From the looks of it, Hapkido seems to combine the locking and throwing aspects of Jiu-jutsu and Aikido, the striking aspects of Karate, and the footwork of Taekwondo.
Hapkido, “The Art of Coordinated Power,” is a Korean martial art that was founded by Choi, Yong-Sool in the 1950′s. Hapkido has a full range fighting arsenal to choose from, but many people know it for its ability to control and subdue an attacker through the use of joint locks, manipulations and pressure points.
There is a big debate on who his teacher was and how he developed the style. Grand Master Choi has said he was taught by Sokaku Takeda, a Grandmaster in Daito Ryu Aiki-jutsu (who also happens to be the teacher of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido). In any case, the similarities in the styles of Hapkido, Aikido and Daito Ryu Aiki-jutsu are unmistakable.
Aside from the obvious self-defense and heath aspects of Hapkido, the main objective is to develop one’s self physically, mentally and spiritually.
